What do you like about the Audiobooks update?

14 05 2010

We want to know how you like the new features of Audiobooks 4.0.  We just released it this week, and would love to hear about what you love.  If you haven’t downloaded the new version, check out the free version, which now supports download.  If ads aren’t your thing, you can get the ad-free version.

Are you happy to see we have some new titles in the app for purchase, and you’ve already listened to How to Train your Dragon?  Do you like the new buttons, or the search by duration feature?  Or are you excited the free version now supports downloading?

Leave us a comment and let us know which new feature is your favorite.

The auto download consumed all the remaining memory on my iPhone even though the auto-download function was turned OFF.

I was quite happy with the Wi-Fi non-download version, and now I apparently have to delete all the titles that I’ve had in my library and start from scratch.

Get your options working before you upgrade please.

…and where the heck are the audiobooks stored. Are they placed in iTunes? Can I manage them elsewhere?

Thank you so much for the feedback. Unfortunately, you can’t manage the audiobooks anywhere else other than in the app.

Same as above, holy cow! Suddenly I have 8 Gigs of Apps (up from <4), and no idea where things are stored or how to delete them. Also, the latest version of Audiobooks Free crashes on startup, likely due to the gigantic database it created without my knowledge. I'm not sure any of this was clearly explained before I upgraded the app. Apparently it just D/L'd everything in my past listening list.
PLEASE have app ask before downloading ANY files. It's a great feature, but not without user discretion to select or decline huge downloads! I'll have to delete it and reinstall now, to clear up my FULL iphone RAM.

Thanks for the feedback – we will definitely look into it.

Follow up. After numerous crashes, the app finally launched, and I was able to find the 13 complete books it auto downloaded – perhaps this shouldn’t be a default behavior? – and was able to delete the ones I don’t want.
Again, thanks for this app, hope you can accept this constructive criticism.

Glad you were able to resolve the problem!

I like the new updates. The app seems easier to navigate now. The screens look more modern. Also I love the new options of Pro and Plus. Now I can enjoy premium quality in the stories I enjoy the most.

Maybe for those of us who just bought the now ad-free version (I bought it because I wanted to be able to download) can maybe have extra features. I don’t really know of any yet. I love the app, just wish I waited for downloads to come back to free version.

That is a great idea – thanks for the feedback.

My app still crashes when I open it. I thought this most recent update would fix that. But it doesn’t. Please fix soon, I love this app.

try deleting the app and re-downloading. Also update your iPhone in iTunes

I already tried both of those things before I wrote here!! Any other ideas?

Hey guys, great work on the interface, been with you since just about the beginning, I suggested the sleep timer and was so happy to see you implement it immediately on the next release! two issues though:

When on edge in the car, I let it just download a new book, (Operation Terror, I think by Murray Leinster, he does great sci fi) while paused so it could download ahead while I was in a low signal area. However, when it got to about chapter 6 on the download screen I hit play. It had downloaded only the first few minutes of the 6 chapters, though there was no way to tell that visually other than the abrupt story continuity jump to the next chapter after 2 minutes.

The app still replays the last chapter of books ad-nauseum – it never stops, just goes back and plays the chapter again and again.

And the biggest issue – it is extremely upsetting to see you take away access to the free librivox recordings, and allow only pay-for versions of the same books with some value-added labor put into them on your end. I understand you’ve got to make money, but I feel like I accepted a deal here – I paid for the app, and you let me access librivox books easily with a sleep timer. I’m ok with the option to hear a better version of a book if I have the extra $, but I don’t right now, and am very disappointed to be shut out of some of the stories I’d been hoping to read. I don’t think the great librivox readers like John Greenman would appreciate that switcheroo, though they have no offical say.

Dan

Ok, I see that they still are available free, but it doesn’t look like they are free in the lists of books, for example going by narrator John Greenman, the Adventures of Tom Sawyer are green with a plus next to them. It just looks like the rest of the plus section. I didn’t click on it at all cause I didn’t want to get inadvertently charged for it, until I just read the FAQ that said the free was still available. Perhaps a note popup when the user first sees such a title.

Dan – thanks for the great feedback! I’m glad you read the FAQs to find out that the free books are still there. A pop-up about the Plus titles is a great idea.

Ok. I’m back. I had an idea. I normally set the timer because I like to listen to the stories as I go to bed, but i always end up having to go back a few minutes. Maybe make the timer have custom timings. Really nice interface. Also, maybe make a way for listeners to be able to rate and comment on the audiobooks within the app.

20 05 2010
Alec

Sorry. Forgot to finish my idea. Anyways, it would let us see what books are highest rates instead of ones that most people listened to.

Awesome – thanks! Yeah, we’ve been batting around the idea of a rating system – we’ll see how it pans out. I really appreciate your thoughts.

I love the new version, you have blended some of the older features that I missed in the last version with the new. The timer slider bar back is a great thing.
I like the new interface and was impressed with the informative tutorial on first launching the new version.
There are some items that would be nice some time in the future. The capability would to download multiple files/books at the same time when connected to WIFI. Not crucial but I tend to pick books in bunches. Another suggestion is if you are listening to a book and you want to download another without interuption a download only button or selection would be great. That way I can still listen to the book that I am finishing without the need to go back into the menu and selecting it again after choosing another to download.
All in all it has insprired me to become a reader so I look forward to participating.
Thanks

Whoops one last comment the updated description page is much easier to read and I think provides more info for the potential reader

Thanks for the ideas about downloading another book while you’re listening – we will look into that for the next release.

The update was a downgrade. I want my dollar back. Before it was simple to use and It wasn’t trying to sell me a bunch of audiobooks. EVEN WORSE, the blasted thing tries to connect to the web everytime I open the app. If I’m out of 3g or worse in an area with no coverage I have to wait for several minutes for the ap to quit looking and let me listen to what I already have downloaded.
Ditch the update, or give me my money back, this is NOT what I paid for!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

11 06 2010
tclassics

Bryan, there is an update waiting for approval right now that has a “cancel” button so if you are out of coverage, you can hit the “cancel” button, and it will stop searching for new books, and you can just listen to what is in your library. Hopefully that will solve your problem.

I love this app but I don’t like having to dowload the book just to play it could you please let me have the option of just listening to the book instead of having to download it.

We have had several requests to be able to have a stream only option, and are working on that for the next release.

Agh customer disservice at it’s finest. It’s interesting that you refuse to comment on negative feedback. When do I get my dollar back because the app I paid for isn’t the one I now have.

I was so excited to hear that Apple has finally let you guys use the download only model for the free app again. I had held on to the 1.0 free version of audiobooks for just about a year without updating and now I finally have the chance to experience all of the new features! I would buy the pay version of the app, but generally I dont have the iMoney for it.

I agree with the above posters that a slider or perhaps a number pad based sleep timer would be better. I also think the app as it stands now is a little bit on the slow side, and the menu speeds less than optimal. The latter is my biggest gripe, as I think an efficient but attractive UI one of the most important part of any program. You guys have attractive down btw.

Other than that I think it would be super-awesome I’d the app downloaded the text with the audio for places where headphones might not be acceptible. If you guys did that this would truly be a killer-app (bad pun intended).

Thank you all so much for your continued work on this amazing app. Please don’t ever stop updating it!

The custom sleep timer should be out in the next few weeks along with some updates that should speed things up. So glad you love the app.

Volume on ipod touch (8Gt) without headset is bit too quiet with max volume on audiobooks free versions. Otherwise great program.

Why your software update make my old all Chinese gone?
How to get back the 老殘遊記、千字文、百家姓 … etc all these old audio free book?
Why you do not test out the updated software before you give it to users?
Please reply!
