Book Rankings in App Stores

I have been working on a Ruby script that collects the rankings of all my apps in the various iTunes Stores around the world. I found the initial results pretty interesting.

Best Ranking Paid Apps

Country Book Ranking
United Kingdom Audiobook-Beatrix Potter 21
New Zealand Audiobook-Pride & Prejudice 22
Netherlands Audiobook-Curious Case of Benjamin Button 30
United States Audiobook-Art Of War 42
Canada Audiobook-Beatrix Potter 51
Spain Audiobook-Curious Case of Benjamin Button 55
Sweden Audiobook-Art Of War 60
Denmark Audiobook-Huckleberry Finn 61
Australia Audiobook-Beatrix Potter 79
France Audiobook-Huckleberry Finn 99

I am not sure what to think of the results, but it is clear that different countries have very different preferences. For example, Beatrix Potter does really well in commonwealth countries (UK, Canada, Australia,…) but very poorly in the US (isn’t even ranked!).

I will keep collecting this data and start to work out trends as we add more books to try and see if broader conclusions can be made.

Oh, and we have nine new books in review with Apple. I’ll let you know once they get approved.

A Full Page

We hit an interesting milestone today. We have submitted 3 new books to the store:

  • Robinson Crusoe
  • Emma
  • Anne of Green Gables

This means that we have now hit a full page of apps!

We’ll announce here once they are approved by Apple and ready for download.

Title Popularity

While I wait for Apple to approve Audiobooks I ran some numbers to see the popularity of our various titles and I thought you might also find it interesting.

Free Books

Title Downloads
Treasure Island 38,230
Tell-Tale Heart 36,095
Gospel of John 8,218
Romans 6,223

Paid Books

Title Downloads
Art Of War 1,824
Pride & Prejudice 1,260
Curious Case of Benjamin Button 1,149
Huckleberry Finn 972
Beatrix Potter 755
Tom Sawyer 437
Alice in Wonderland 376
Communist Manifesto 186
A Little Princess 104

As you might expect our free books are doing better than our paid ones, and by almost a 75-1 ratio.

One great feature about Audiobooks is that it will keep track of real-time popularity statistics within the application to see which books people are listening to.

Silence Explained-Exciting News

As you may have noticed it has been many months since my last post. First, I wanted to explain this and give an update on the amazing progress of Traveling Classics.

Traveling Classics is essentially a ‘Mom-and-Pop’ operation. I do the software engineering and my wife does the editing. On February 16th, my wife and I had our first son. As any new parent knows, this had lead to a dramatic shift in our lives and, with respect to Traveling Classics, caused my wife to have a lot less time to spend working to edit new titles. As things settle down we are planning to continue adding more titles.

In the meantime, however, you have shown us amazing support and encouragement. The vast majority of reviews we receive are positive and to date we have now had 98,829 downloads (including both our free and paid books). That number alone is staggering to me, since it is only two months since we launched the products. It works out to something like 1,597 downloads a day, 67 an hour, and about one a minute. All I can say is: Thank you.

Now, for the exciting news. We have created a new application to take Traveling Classics to the next level. It has a simple name, Audiobooks, but a massive reach. Instead, of just including single books in each app Audiobooks provides access to the entire Librivox library. You can browse/search through over 1,800 books and then download them to your device for playback. As before, it keeps track of your current bookmarks for you. Plus, we have decided to make this app free.

We never felt totally happy with selling the content of the Librivox project, since its purpose is make these great books available to world at no charge. So what we have decided to do is to support Audiobooks with advertising and affiliate links. We will continue to charge $0.99 (or equivalent) for our premium titles that include hand-edited audio and synchronized scrolling full text.

The app was submitted to Apple for review 8 days ago, so we are hoping it will be approved any day now. When it is, we will announce it here — Stay Tuned.
